About Professor Amer Awan:
Professor Amer Awan is a UK-trained, CCT-certified Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist with over 25 years of extensive clinical and surgical experience. He is currently practicing at Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan, where he provides comprehensive care across a wide spectrum of ophthalmic subspecialties. He is a highly skilled Cataract Specialist, with expertise in both routine and complex cataract surgery, including advanced intraocular lens implantation such as toric, multifocal, and enhanced depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. In addition, he is an experienced Refractive Surgeon who routinely performs PRK, LASIK, Femto LASIK, Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) procedures, and refractive lens exchange. Professor Awan is a highly accomplished vitreoretinal surgeon with extensive expertise in managing both adult and paediatric retinal diseases. He completed his specialised vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow. Recognised as a pioneer in South Asia, he was an early adopter of 27-gauge vitrectomy and remains among the select group of retinal surgeons worldwide who routinely perform this ultra–microincision technique—the smallest gauge currently available. This approach allows for greater surgical precision, quicker recovery, and improved patient comfort. He continues to lead in advanced sutureless microincision vitrectomy, utilising both 25- and 27-gauge systems. Over the course of his career, he has successfully performed thousands of complex retinal and cataract surgeries, consistently delivering excellent clinical outcomes. He holds fellowships from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London), the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow). He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American College of Surgeons, and an alumnus of the Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program. In addition to his clinical work, Professor Awan plays an active role in postgraduate education and professional development. He serves as an examiner for both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow), He is a council member of several national and international ophthalmological societies. His outstanding contributions to the field have been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award, the President’s Award of Excellence, and the Lateef Chaudhry Gold Medal for Vitreoretinal Services in Pakistan. A committed academic and educator, Professor Awan is regularly invited to speak at leading international and national conferences, where he delivers lectures, conducts instructional courses, and performs live surgical demonstrations. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and is currently serving as Principal Investigator in major multicentre clinical trials, including the Asia Pacific Ocular Trauma Study (APOTS) and the ALVOEYE Trial evaluating biosimilar Aflibercept for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration. |
